In 5th grade, the reading skills we focus on are: main idea, problem/solution, inferences, compare/contrast, summarizing, generalizations, predictions, cause/effect, and many more.
We will use the textbook (Treasures) plus novels during Literature Circles. Lit Circles help the students apply the skills to a book with a deeper plot.
